Acupuncture

Acupuncture activates and improves the balance and flow of our internal resources (i.e. endorphin, neurological transmitters, blood flow, etc ) by using micro-fine (hair-like) disposable needles.  Needles are never re-used.  As we all know, the human body is a complex system, but what some of us forget or take for granted is that it has the ability to heal itself.  Our body has the capability to regenerate itself with cells and chemical  signals within us, signaling natural pain relieving substances, anti-inflammatory chemistry, hormones, and immune system enhancer.

Acupuncture helps the body manage and heal itself by squeezing more out of our natural self-healing capabilities, healing the body from inside out.  Acupuncture is one of the key modalities used in Traditional Chinese/Asian Medicine and has been around for over 2000+ years.

In an official report, Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials, the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the following symptoms, diseases and conditions that have been shown through controlled trials to be treated effectively by acupuncture:

  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • sciatica
  • tennis elbow
  • knee pain
  • periarthritis of the shoulder
  • sprains
  • facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
  • headache
  • dental pain
  • tempromandibular (TMJ) dysfunction
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • morning sickness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • postoperative pain
  • stroke
  • renal colic
  • allergic rhinitis, including hay fever
  • biliary colic
  • depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke)
  • primary dysmenorrhea
  • acute and chronic gastritis

Traditional Chinese/Asian Medicine

Tuina

Therapeutic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) form of massage and hands on body work.  Pronounced “twee naw” meaning to grasp and pull.  Tuina is a form of treatment that address specific patterns of disharmony in the body; relieving multiple disorders including insomnia, constipation, headaches, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, and emotional problems. It can also treat disorders related to digestive, respiratory, and reproductive systems.  Tuina can be used to address both internal diseases and external injuries, in conjunction with acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. Cupping Therapy

An ancient form of alternative medicine that can be used together with acupuncture, tuina, and moxibustion where a licensed and skilled practitioner puts special cups (i.e. glass, bamboo, or plastic suction cups) on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People, especially athletes, get it for many purposes because it helps with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.  Think of it as a reverse massage, instead of the skin being pressed or kneaded down, it is being suctioned. The suction pulls out and assist the body in detoxifying dead blood cells to the surface of the skin, leaving a dark circle(s).

In TCM the darks circle(s) are not considered bruises because they are not created upon impact or trauma.  Dark circle are created due to the suction of the cups, which is an indication of disharmony patterns and tension in the body.  Some people will have darker circles then others, and some don’t at all.  Cupping therapy results and experiences differ from person to person.

Cupping is contraindicated in pregnancy, patients with bleeding disorders, patients who bruise very easily (from medications etc), patients with skin ulcers and those currently receiving radiation or chemotherapy.

Moxibustion

Used on people who have a cold or stagnant condition. The burning of moxa (mugwort) is believed to expel cold and warm the meridians, which leads to smoother flow of blood and qi (energy).  Qi is a termed used in TCM to describe the life force within us and all living things in the universe.  To learn more about moxibustion and its therapeutic effects, click here
